The Maison de Balzac, which was one of the residences of the famous writer, is one of the literary jewels of the capital, located in the 25e arrondissement of Paris. This house-museum also hosts an incredible garden with a view of the Eiffel Tower as well as a café.

After having visited the house of Victor Hugo, come and discover the house of Balzac! The place hosts a real green setting with view of the Eiffel Tower, hidden from view, perfect for quiet sunbathing. Freshly renovated, the house-museum of the famous writer is once again accessible. It was here, in Passy, that Balzac lived for seven years and wrote The Human Comedy. This house, transformed into a museum, reveals the personal life of Balzac to us: manuscripts, everyday objects, paintings, engravings, original editions.

On the program, the visit of three floors of the building, a former private mansion, but also the discovery of a confidential garden with a unique view, where nestles a little English café, The Rose Bakery. It is the only remaining residence of the writer today. He lived there from 824 to 1847, under the pseudonym of "Mister Breugnol", in order to flee his creditors. Honoré de Balzac was indeed in debt at this time, and wrote every evening by candlelight in one of the five rooms of his apartment. Surprisingly, from the outside, you can see only one floor, the others seem to be underground because the ground is sloping.

  • In 1910, Louis Baudier de Royaumont rents this apartment from Balzac and transforms it into a museum, inaugurated in July 2019. The pavilion will then be classified as a historical monument, just like the gardens, a few years later. Work must be carried out within the years 2019 but their realization is delayed and the Maison de Balzac will finally reopen only in 2019. You can find in the renovated building documents of the author, his manuscripts, rare editions, paintings, or even unusual objects, such as his coffee maker.
