But what is going on in the bowels of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris? A second lead sarcophagus was discovered during archaeological excavations, in very good condition. Another exceptional discovery!

In March, the Ministry of Culture announced the discovery of important archaeological remains in the heart of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris , including a lead sarcophagus dating from 14th century. Dorothée Chaoui-Derieux, chief curator of heritage in the archeology department of the Drac Île-de-France, revealed to Parisien, that a second sarcophagus had been unearthed at the beginning of April, and that it was in excellent condition.

The bowels of the cathedral, which burned down in 380 and has been under construction since, still contain many mysteries. This operation of archaeological excavations, now complete, has therefore led to the discovery of two lead sarcophagi, under the nave of the cathedral. It was on the last day of the excavations, before the installation of scaffolding work to rebuild the spire, that the archaeologists "r

hoped for a gap under the stone apron", where the camera revealed the presence of a new sarcophagus, " in its plaster vault in very good condition and located closer to the choir than the first", explains Dorothée Chaoui-Derieux.

While waiting to discover what this new element contains, the first sarcophagus has already revealed some of its secrets. He will be transferred to the forensic institute of Toulouse to be opened " by the summer ", but we already know that it contains "a skeleton of a high dignitary, some hair, plants and fragments of textile". Once the necessary samples have been taken, the skeleton will be reinterred at Notre-Dame, at the request of the Archdiocese of Paris.
