According to a decree published on 26 April 2022 in the Official Journal, it will soon be possible to have your digital identity card in your smartphone thanks to the launch of a dedicated application, entitled "Public Service digital identity". Purpose of this tool? Prove your identity online.

In concrete terms, to benefit from this electronic identification method, two conditions must be met. First of all, you will need a NFC compatible phone (“Near Field Communication“, famous contactless technology). If you already use your Android smartphone to take transport or to make certain contactless payments (via Apple Pay, Google Pay Samsung Pay...), then dont worry. .

Then, you will need to have the new identity card in credit card format. Because these new biometric identity cards launched in August 2021 are equipped with an electronic chip containing information on your identity. The idea being to approach the phone within cm of the identity card to be able to configure the future application on your smartphone.

According to the decree, this digital identity application must allow " to identify and authenticate with public or private organizations ”, in particular those available via FranceConnect, such as the tax or health insurance site. The future application must also make it possible to " provide proof of identity to put an end to the scans of identity cards, but also to prove that you are of age without revealing your identity or even giving a power of attorney in one click ”, explains the government site .

In addition, the application will allow in particular " to generate electronic certificates comprising only the identity attributes which it considers necessary to transmit to third parties of its choice " .

So, what exactly will this future application contain? Depending on the text, data allowing the identification of the user, such as surname and first name, date of birth, nationality, postal address or even a photo, may be indicated.

For now, no official launch date has been announced. But according to RTL, the application should be launched at the end of May in a test version before a possible final launch at the end of year. This service should also be extended to passports and residence permits at the end of the year 2022.

For its part, the National Commission for Computing and Liberties (CNIL) has issued two positive opinions on this project, specifying however the need not to make this compulsory tool. " The creation of the electronic identification means and its use are the sole will of the users ", specifies moreover the decree.
