Google plans to shut down Hangouts; asks users to move to GChat

Hangouts was unveiled in 2013 and was said to be a planned successor to Google Talk or GChat. The platform is almost on the verge of closing after a decade.

Google, the tech behemoth, had in February this year removed the Hangouts app for the Workspace users, replacing it with the novel Google Chat.

As per recent reports, the firm is now all set to shut down the older Hangouts completely later this year, prompting all the current users of the platform to move to Google Chat.

In a new blog post, Google disclosed that Hangouts would be taken down in November 2022, and the users on mobile and desktops will be asked to shift to Google Chat before that.

The chat data from the Hangout platform will be available automatically on Google Chat, giving the users an option to download all their Hangout data before it gets axed.

From now on, the mobile users will be seeing an in-app screen asking users to move to Chat in Gmail or Chat app.

Likewise, people using the Chrome extensions of Hangouts will be asked to shift to Chat on the web or install the Chat web app.

As per credible reports, people using Hangouts on the web will be upgraded to Chat in Gmail in July.

The Hangout users will see an in-product notice at least a month before the web is taken down completely.

After this, the Hangouts web will automatically redirect visitors to the Google Chat web.

Furthermore, Google guaranteed that the Hangout conversations would be automatically migrated to Chat from Hangouts. However, some data or portions may not be able to migrate automatically.

In such cases, a mail will be sent to the users to take a backup with the Google Takeout before the app is taken down.
