Republic of Korea, ASEAN solidify alliance to drive regional development

The senior officials of the Republic of Korea, or ROK, and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asia Nations) have reportedly re-established their commitment to solidify their strategic partnership to expand cooperation for mutual benefit during the latest ASEAN-ROK meeting held last week.

The Dialogue was co-chaired by ROK Deputy Foreign Ministry for Political Affairs, Yeo Seung-Bae, and Director-General, Vu Ho, who serves as the Acting SOM Leader of Vietnam.

During the event, ASEAN and ROK shared views on critical matters concerning the Korean Peninsula, the South China Sea, developments across Myanmar, as well as the current Ukrainian crisis, with the objective of promoting stability, peace, and development in the region.

Moreover, the meeting discussed the progresses pertaining to the implementation of ASEAN-ROK Plan of Action during 2021-2025, notably highlighting several initiatives taken to improve disaster management, public health, environment & climate change, culture, youth exchanges, and education.

Other contributions of the ASEAN-ROK cooperation include effectively addressing the Covid-19 pandemic along with the US$6 million capital infused by ROK into the Covid-19 ASEAN Response Fund.

As a part of the renewed commitment, both sides will work closely to enable regional recovery by implementing the ASEAN Comprehensive Recovery Framework.

ASEAN and ROK have also identified target areas that require better regional resilience, for instance, maritime cooperation, labor market, digital economy, development of micro, small & medium enterprises, infrastructure, and tourism, in order to bridge the development gap.

The Association of Southeast Asian Union has further welcomed the commitment of the new Government of ROK with a view of building closer cooperation with ASEAN.

The new Korean governance has recognized climate change as a key priority area of ASEAN cooperation with initiatives like the mutually arranged Carbon Dialogue, and the collaboration focused on ASEAN-ROK Methane Action.

Additionally, ASEAN has accepted ROK’s support in encouraging the ASEAN Outlook in the Indo-Pacific along with its intent to drive practical cooperation across key areas.
