UNESCO extends partnership with SROS to drive local research in Samoa

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, & Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has inked a pact with the Scientific Research Organization of Samoa (SROS) to jointly support research initiatives in the country of Samoa.

The partnership is reportedly formed under the UNJP on Ecosystem Services ‘Building Forward Better’ by safeguarding Natural Capital & Ecosystem Services.

The project is a joint venture led by the Joint SDG Fund of the UN and the Government of Samoa.

Under the leadership of UNESCO, the initiative involves participation from UN organizations like UNEP and UNESCAP, with SPREP as the regional partner. Whereas the national implementing partners include SROS, and the Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment (MNRE).

Moreover, the collaboration will introduce the core staff of SROS to scientific capacity development along with the development of guidelines for structuring policy around bioethics.

Speaking on the partnership, CEO of SROS, Seuseu Tauati, PhD, mentioned that SROS takes its role as the local research organization very seriously and strives to support the natural capital and ecosystem services of Samoa to enhance policy and management efforts.

Ms Nisha, Director of the Office, & UNESCO Representative to the Pacific States addressed the challenges in realizing ambitions set by global and regional conventions on biodiversity right from erosion of the ecosystem, climate change, poor understanding of culture, and COVID-19 pandemic.

Nisha added that UNESCO’s biodiversity-focused initiatives promote integration between learning, conservation, and sustainable development to overcome hurdles faced on a local as well as global scale.

The latest partnership underpins efforts to ensure that natural assets including customary knowledge are conserved and used sustainably.

Through the UNJP on Ecosystem Services, Samoa is contributing its share of efforts to the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030. It also supports the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030, putting its best foot forward.

SROS and UNESCO have further pledged their alliance in driving extended cooperation for positive and widespread impacts by executing the technical tasks as a part of the UNJP program.
