With triple-band 3-sector 5G radio Ericsson sets the sustainability bar

Swedish telecom major, Ericsson has unveiled a brand-new tri-sector, triple band radio that can replace nine radios and is once again defining sustainable networks. Radio 6646 is 40% more energy-efficient than triple-band one-sector radios. Due to the use of aluminum, it is also 60% lighter in design, thus lowering the site footprint.

By merging the 700, 800 and 900MHz frequency bands into a single small, 2G to 5G-capable radio, the new radio expands the multiband functionality of Ericsson tri-sector devices.

The low-band spectrum capabilities of Radio 6646 will greatly improve both mid-band (3.5GHz) and 5G coverage performance in an energy-efficient manner in response to the ever-increasing need for more sustainable solutions from communications service providers (CSPs).

A 40% decrease in energy use can result in annual savings at each location that are equal to charging an electric car 40 times. Furthermore, the 60% less weight of the product will aid CSPs to reduce deployment costs, tower rent, and carbon footprint.

According to Ericsson's David Hammarwall, Head of Product Area Networks, the new energy-efficient radio combines spectrum capabilities that is simple to deploy. With an initial focus on Europe, this will streamline installations and increase 5G coverage.

Service providers may scale up 5G Standalone installations with new applications for consumers, businesses, and mission-critical communications thanks to the most recent innovation, he added.

The outside-in coverage of Radio 6646 will extend from roofs and towers to inside spaces including offices, basements, shops, and houses. In particular, when paired with mid-band TDD via Carrier Aggregation and 5G Standalone, it will boost the capacity of 5G networks.

The dual-band, three-sector Radio 6626, which was launched in 2021 and is now offered for sale in several international countries, will now be replaced by Radio 6646. In addition, earlier this year Ericsson revealed seven innovative 5G RAN solutions that offer significant energy reductions and capacity gains of up to 10 times with little to no additional footprint.
